Hidden among the rolling landscapes of Victoria, Australia, Galahad’s Sanctuary is more than just a rescue. It’s a place where animals who were once unwanted, neglected, abused, or seen as “products” are finally given the chance to simply live in peace.

Founded by passionate animal advocate Lynne McAlister, the sanctuary has become a safe haven for rescued camels, cows, sheep, alpacas, horses, donkeys, chickens, dogs, and many other animals who now call the sanctuary home. But beyond rescue, Galahad’s Sanctuary carries a much bigger mission: helping people reconnect with compassion and see animals as the unique individuals they truly are.

A Sanctuary Built on Kindness

At the heart of Galahad’s Sanctuary is a simple but powerful belief: “Be Kind to Every Kind.”

Many of the animals who arrive at the sanctuary come from difficult circumstances connected to the food system, neglect, abandonment, or exploitation. Some arrive fearful and traumatised. Others have never known gentleness before.

Here, they are finally given safety, care, friendship, and the freedom to just be themselves.

One of the most beautiful things about sanctuaries like Galahad’s is that they allow people to meet animals outside of the roles society usually assigns to them.

A cow becomes someone curious and affectionate.
A camel becomes playful and sensitive.
A chicken becomes intelligent and full of personality.

And once people truly see them, it becomes much harder to look away again.

The Camel Stories That Changed Hearts

Some of the sanctuary’s most loved residents are the camels Milkshake, Catapult, and Harley Quinn.

Their stories are deeply emotional and perfectly capture what Galahad’s Sanctuary is all about.

Milkshake and Catapult were rescued together from an auction after suffering difficult past experiences. Lynne quickly realised how emotionally bonded they were and knew they needed to stay together. Catapult in particular had experienced significant trauma and was terrified of human touch. With patience, time, and compassion, he slowly began learning to trust again.

Later, Harley Quinn arrived from a closing camel dairy farm. Lynne has since dedicated herself not only to rescuing camels, but also to educating people about these deeply misunderstood animals.

Through their stories, visitors begin seeing camels not as exotic creatures or commodities, but as emotional, intelligent individuals deserving of kindness and respect.

More Than Rescue

Galahad’s Sanctuary is also a place of education, community, and healing.

Visitors can volunteer, attend events, meet the animals, and experience meaningful connection with nature and rescued animals firsthand. The sanctuary encourages people to reflect on the impact of their everyday choices and promotes a more compassionate, sustainable way of living.

The sanctuary has also been recognised through media features and award nominations for its advocacy and educational work helping shift the relationship between humans and animals.

Why Sanctuaries Like This Matter

Places like Galahad’s Sanctuary remind us that every animal is someone, not something.

They remind us that healing is possible.
That trust can return.
That kindness changes lives — not only for animals, but for humans too.

And perhaps most importantly, they help create a world where compassion reaches beyond the animals we traditionally call “pets” and extends to all beings.
