Bono came to us from a tough place, and he carried a wariness about people that never entirely left him — the world had given him reason for it, and we always understood. But he decided, in his own time and on his own terms, that his mum was safe; and once he’d made that decision, he held onto it with the quiet loyalty that only a creature who has known hardship truly can. He had two great loves in this life: her, and apples, and he pursued both with equal dedication. He leaves behind a pasture that feels too large now, and someone who will miss the soft weight of his trust more than words can say.
