Our Forever Place

Where all our love lives on

Mathilda

13 May 2010 - 1 May 2026

I got Mathilda as a kitten, back when it was just the two of us and life felt very open and a little uncertain. She was tiny and certain in a way I wasn’t quite yet, and I think she knew that. She settled into our flat like she’d always been there, and from that first night — curled beside me like a small warm anchor — she was mine and I was hers.

She was there for everything. The good years and the harder ones. She was there when the children arrived and took the upheaval of small humans with the quiet dignity of someone who had seen it all before. She watched them grow up from her spot on the sofa with the patient air of a very old librarian. She let them love her, on her own terms.

She stayed with me and the kids after the divorce, and I will always be grateful for that — not just her presence, but what it meant to them to have something that didn’t change. On the nights when the house felt too quiet, she would find me. She always knew. She’d arrange herself against my side and purr in that low, unhurried way she had, and it was enough. It was always enough.

Sixteen years is a long time to share a life with someone. She knew every version of me — younger, more uncertain, then slowly more myself. She saw me build something new and was there for all of it, a constant thread running through years that were sometimes hard to hold together.

She went quietly, just shy of her sixteenth birthday.

My darling Mathilda. I didn’t know, when I brought home that little kitten, what a long love I was beginning. Thank you for every one of those years. Thank you for staying.
